Nettle fiber

Presentation

material

Native to the Himalayan mountain ranges (Nepal, India), nettle fibre has been used for millennia in textiles and rope-making, including uniforms for Napoleon III’s army. Biobject has partnered with Maison E.BOEHM to offer hand-knotted rugs made from nettle fibre.

A French house based in Colmar, in the heart of Alsace’s textile region, E.BOEHM creates “Mosaïques de Velours”, original pieces crafted in Nepalese workshops specialising in hand-knotting.

The house favours renewable plant-based materials with a very low water and carbon footprint, and develops natural dyes.

Through a fair-trade label, the brand supports artisans, promotes gender equality, ensures decent working conditions and access to training, and helps preserve exceptional craftsmanship in the face of mass, low-cost production.
