Raw or glazed lava stone
Elegance and
sustainability
Of a density of 2.4/2.5, this rock is of volcanic origin. After enameling, it is completely impervious to frost and acid attack of any kind. Its first uses included laboratory countertops, road signs by the MICHELIN company, and street nameplates. Today, it is used for orientation tables in high-mountain areas.
Due to its initial porosity, its enameling requires a first step of slip coating, followed by firing at a temperature of around 1000°. It is possible to obtain a classic uniform enamel or a crazed enamel, called tressaillage, which can be contrasted in the manner of Japanese raku.
